Ride + Stride 2016
On Saturday 10th September 2016 riders and walkers battled through the most unpleasant weather conditions experienced on Ride and Stride day for some years, the rain was constant from start to finish and although it did ease a little to a warm light drizzle during the middle of the day, towards evening it intensified again and the cooling temperatures and poor visibility made the final miles of the day less than pleasant.
Many churches had taken the opportunity to put on special events, some were part of Heritage Open Days and there was a fabulous array of special activities on offer from bell ringing, exhibitions, organ recitals and tours, to coffee mornings and pop up tea rooms. There were friendly faces to welcome participants at many of the churches and copious cups of hot tea and plates of delicious cake on offer.
The opportunity to discover the everyday gems that hide behind churchyard gates cannot be underestimated – a churchyard awash with pink cyclamen flowers, a beautiful rose window, the charm of a Victorian schoolroom, jolly bunting strung up to welcome visitors and the warm welcome at many churches were just a few of the highlights of the day.
Despite the poor weather we are delighted to report that the 2016 event saw an increase in funds raised over the previous year and we are very grateful to everyone who took part. Very many people contribute to make the day a success from organising, catering and sponsoring to running, walking, riding and collecting the funds and we really appreciate all the help we receive which enables the trust to continue its work in supporting Buckinghamshire’s beautiful churches.
